Strategy Analytics: OpenStack, CloudStack Bite into VMware

VMware (VMW) had a dominant share of the IaaS market, but that share has been on a downward slide the last few years as open source cloud platforms continue to eat away at the virtualization solutions vendor’s market share. That’s according to new research from Strategy Analytics Business Cloud Strategies, which noted in a recent report that the likes of OpenStack and CloudStack have managed to swipe some of VMware’s share of the IaaS market.

Additionally, other IaaS providers have managed to gain a strong foothold in the industry. Mark Levitt, director of Business Cloud Strategies research at Strategy Analytics, noted in his report that other commercial providers including Microsoft (MSFT), 8×8 and OnApp have also put the squeeze on VMware.

“Flexibility and agility are critical elements of cloud computing not only for customers but for service providers as well. With cloud market opportunities still looking hazy regarding what services to offer and how significant public and private cloud solutions will be for their businesses, cloud service providers are looking to choose the cloud platform that will keep their options open and deliver the biggest return on investments,” Levitt said in a prepared statement. …
