Canonical Debuts Ubuntu OpenStack Lab for Partners and ISVs

In a bid to make it easier than ever to integrate Ubuntu Linux into the OpenStack open source cloud ecosystem, Canonical has launched the Ubuntu OpenStack Interoperability Lab with a slew of major channel partners including Cisco Systems (CSCO), Dell, Intel (INTC), IBM (IBM) and more. That’s the latest news out of the OpenStack Design Summit and Conference this week in Hong Kong.

Announced Nov. 5, the Ubuntu OpenStack Interoperability Lab, or OIL, is a physical laboratory that “will test and validate the interoperability of hardware and software,” according to Canonical. The goal is to make it easier for channel partners to build solutions that combine Ubuntu with OpenStack, the massively popular open source cloud platform.

Canonical says Cisco, Dell, EMC, Emulex, Fusion-io, Open Compute, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), IBM, Inktank/Ceph, Intel, Juniper (JNPR), LSi (LSI), SeaMicro and VMware (VMW) are all onboard as partners in the OIL, though it’s not clear as of yet exactly what role they’ll play there. The company has also pointed to “customers, ISVs and hardware manufacturers” as the groups it expects to benefit most from the initiative.

The OIL will offer the most obvious value to Canonical partners with a strong focus on building open source solutions based on Ubuntu. But it could also be significant beyond the Ubuntu ecosystem, since it promises to help validate some of the key upstream open source technologies that are a part of Ubuntu, including virtualization hypervisors and software-defined networking (SDN) stacks, for use with OpenStack.

The announcement of the lab comes as OpenStack enjoys more momentum than ever. The latest release of the platform, Havana, introduced an array of new features when it appeared back in October. And Canonical’s competitors, such as Red Hat (RHT), have already made their OpenStack commitment clear.

The OIL will perform testing for all currently supported and future releases of Ubuntu and OpenStack.
